Cover Story: Finite element methods used in soft robotics are not suitable for the real-time computation of model-dependent controllers. Here, we propose a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) architecture supported by an embedded Nvidia GPU with highly parallel computing capabilities, responsible for calculating an inverse-dynamics controller to drive the soft exoskeleton with O(log2n) computational performance. We demonstrate that this control output can be generated in real time (127 ms), facilitating modular, dynamics-based non-linear control of soft exoskeletons by following an HIL approach.
