Cover Story: Recent Texas legislation changes the civic engagement landscape. On public university campuses, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is prohibited. How can one still pursue success for all? Building on Town Hall, Tarleton State University’s civic engagement program, we recommend that: (1) Institutions stay open to outreach through the leadership of student groups and guest speakers; (2) civic engagement programs fine-tune the selection of advanced peer leaders, empowering them to attract those speakers; and (3) universities allow representatives to travel to underserved parts of the state, with affirmative effects. Building on Morrow, Kabala, and Hartness (2023) and on the distinction between formal and informal power, we leverage trust for the sake of genuine inclusion, consistent with current legal limitations in Texas.
