Cover Story: Accurate placement of prosthetic implants in shoulder replacement is known to play a significant role in improving functional outcomes and longevity. Augmented Reality systems have many promising advantages, including allowing the surgeon to study the patient’s anatomy without the need for invasive procedures and allowing virtual interrogation of the joint’s surface.
AR technologies has the further potential to assist surgeons intraoperatively, aiding the guidance of surgical tools. This offers the prospect of increased component placement accuracy, reduced surgical procedure time, and improved radiological and functional outcomes.
In this AR proof-of-concept study, we demonstrate superior accuracy of guidewire placement in shoulder replacement. View this paper
