Cover Story: Along with unhealthy diet and lifestyle changes, the prevalence of fatty liver disease (FLD) has increased. Genome-wide association studies have revealed many genetic risk factors for FLD. In 2018, genetic variants of hydroxysteroid 17-β dehydrogenase family 13 (HSD17B13) were first associated with a lower risk of developing alcoholic liver disease and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in minor allele carriers. HSD17B13 is a lipid-droplet-associated protein, but its function remains ambiguous. Human liver tissue modeling using induced pluripotent stem cells may provide insight into the protective mechanisms of these variants and allow for therapeutic targeting. View this paper
