Cover Story: Abrasive brushing processes are used for deburring, edge rounding, and roughness reduction. However, industrial brushing processes have historically relied on empirical knowledge due to the complex motion, chipping, and wear behavior of abrasive filaments. To better understand filament interactions, a physical model based on the discrete element method was developed to simulate process forces, contact areas, and interaction frequencies. Filament patterns of round brushes were determined through laser line triangulation and image processing. When used in brushing simulations, these experimental patterns yielded more accurate results than the oversimplified square patterns of previous research. The model could potentially be used to predict work results, dynamics, and tool wear. View this paper
