Cover Story: We report, for the first time, the presence of super-reduced (SuR), nominally ultra-high pressure (UHP) and continental crust-derived phases in chromitites from the Caribbean (Mercedita chromitite deposit, eastern Cuba). This assemblage includes moissanite (SiC) hosted in the altered matrix of the chromitite, oriented clinopyroxene and rutile lamellae in chromite, graphite-like amorphous carbon, corundum and SiO2 hosted in healed fractures in chromite grains, and native Cu and Fe-Mn alloys in heavy-mineral concentrates. The origin of this assemblage is discussed and interpreted as related to the alteration (serpentinization) process that affected the deposit at low pressure. View this paper
