Cover Story: Pectin-based edible films are emerging as eco-friendly alternatives to conventional packaging. However, their limited barrier and antimicrobial properties restrict wider applications. To address this, pectin films enriched with gamma-decalactone (GDL) were developled. The incorporation of GDL altered the films’ structure, reducing their brightness, enhancing their hydrophobicity, and introducing antimicrobial functionality. These modifications improved the films’ protective capacity, suggesting their potential use as active packaging materials. By combining biodegradability with functional properties, GDL-modified pectin films present a promising strategy to enhance food safety and extend the shelf life of perishable fruits. View this paper
