Cover Story: Dye-doped liquid crystals (LCs), which reversibly control their molecular orientation by light, have attracted great attention in the development of all-optical devices, such as smart windows. However, the sensitivity of molecular reorientation in dye-doped LCs is still low for the application to optical devices. A. Shishido et al. reported the effect of the host LC structure on the photoinduced response in oligothiophene-doped LCs. The threshold light intensity for the molecular reorientation in trifluorinated LCs was 42% lower than that in LCs without fluorine substituents.
