This Topic aims to provide a comprehensive platform to advance our understanding of the inflammatory mechanisms linking endothelial dysfunction to cardiometabolic risk factors and cardiovascular disease (CVD). It seeks to highlight cutting-edge basic, translational, and clinical research elucidating how chronic inflammation, immune dysregulation, oxidative stress, and metabolic disturbances contribute to vascular injury, disease progression, and adverse cardiovascular outcomes. The Topic also welcomes studies identifying novel biomarkers, therapeutic targets, and precision medicine approaches that improve cardiovascular risk assessment and treatment.
Endothelial dysfunction represents one of the earliest manifestations of vascular injury and serves as a central mediator connecting traditional and emerging cardiometabolic risk factors—including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, obesity, dyslipidemia, chronic kidney disease, insulin resistance, and hyperuricemia—to the development of atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular disorders. Growing evidence further implicates inflammatory signaling pathways, immune cell activation, vascular remodeling, and microvascular dysfunction in the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease, heart failure, stroke, peripheral arterial disease, vascular calcification, and autoimmune vascular diseases.
