Cancer Microenvironment in Veterinary Oncology and Therapeutic Opportunities

For several decades, cancer studies have mainly focused on the genetic instability of tumour cells, somehow neglecting the direct impact of the microenvironment in cancer evolution, often relegated to the role of “mutation trigger”. Nowadays, it is common knowledge that solid tumours are not simple clumps of similar cancer cells, but rather “abnormal organs” composed of multiple cell phenotypes embedded in modified extracellular matrices, forming the so-called “tumour microenvironment”. In one single tumour mass, it is possible to find mesenchymal supporting cells (fibroblasts and adipocytes), endothelial cells and cells of the immune system (macrophages and lymphocytes), to name the most common ones. The genomic and epigenomic abnormalities of cancer cells trigger microenvironment changes that lead to the formation of a supportive “tumour microenvironment” that favours neoplastic cell proliferation, survival, differentiation, and spread. The aim of this Special Issue is to publish original research work or reviews on the topic of the microenvironment role in animal cancer development as well as therapeutic strategies targeting these tumour–microenvironment interactions.
