Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The environment, technology, and delivering innovative service experiences are all fundamental to a prosperous hospitality and tourism industry.  This Special Issue of Sustainability combines these three areas of research to explore how customers can contribute to fostering sustainable technological innovation.

COVID-19 emphasised the significance of technology for connectivity, which is shaping the metaverse movement by blending the real and physical worlds. During periods of lockdown, technology facilitated customer engagement and connections for business survival and growth. More customers are now embracing technology as part of their daily lives than ever before. Technology will continue to be an important megatrend with the users playing a vital role in shaping its future use. Alongside this, there is a growth of green activism. Customers are seeking low-carbon lifestyles and Euromonitor International (2002) has stated that one-third of global customers were taking active steps to reduce their emissions in 2021. Businesses that are considering sustainability actions are growing (United Nations Environment Programme, 2021). We are also witnessing customers increasingly engaging with technology such as social media and carbon tracking apps in making these responsible choices. Whilst there is a strong interest in the motivations of sustainability and practical outcomes, little is known about how the hospitality and tourism industry is engaging with customers to deliver and drive sustainable technological innovation for the longevity of the industry. Customer-led innovation is gaining more traction in the literature as customers are becoming more willing to be involved in the innovative co-creation process (Lee et al., 2017; Pikkemaat et al., 2019).

This Special Issue invites disciplinary specific, multidisciplinary, and transdisciplinary contributions that investigate customers driving sustainable technological innovation. Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Smart technology and sustainable innovation
  • Customers as co-producers in sustainable technological innovation
  • Customers, SMEs, and sustainable technological innovation
  • Open innovations
  • Social innovations
  • Eco-innovation
  • Constraints and resources for sustainable technological innovation
  • Typologies, theories, or models of customer-driven sustainable technological innovation
  • Host communities as customers in driving sustainable technological innovation
