Application of Porous Functional Materials in CO2 Capture and Utilization
This special issue belongs to the section "Materials in Separation Science".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Porous functional materials are attracting growing interest for carbon dioxide capture and utilization due to their high surface area, tunable pore structure, and versatile surface chemistry. This Special Issue aims to highlight recent advances in the design, synthesis, characterization, and application of porous materials for efficient and sustainable CO₂ separation, capture, regeneration, and conversion.
Contributions addressing adsorbents such as metal-organic frameworks, zeolites, activated carbons, porous polymers, functionalized silicas, hybrid materials, and waste-derived sorbents are particularly welcome. Studies dealing with structure-property relationships, adsorption thermodynamics and kinetics, selectivity, stability, cyclic performance, and regeneration strategies are encouraged, together with research on material shaping and scale-up.
The Special Issue also welcomes contributions focused on the process and engineering aspects of CO₂ capture and utilization, including reactor and contactor design (e.g., fixed-bed, fluidized-bed, moving bed systems, etc.), adsorption process configurations, cyclic operation (e.g., temperature- and pressure-swing processes), process intensification, modeling and simulation, and techno-economic or life-cycle assessment.
Particular attention is also given to approaches integrating CO₂ capture with subsequent utilization, including catalytic and photocatalytic conversion, mineralization, and other routes toward value-added products.
Experimental, computational, and review contributions that bridge material development and process engineering are invited, with the overall goal of advancing porous functional materials from fundamental understanding toward practical carbon-management application.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Separations is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
