Resource Recovery from Complex Wastewaters: Materials, Technologies, and Strategies
This special issue belongs to the section "Environmental Separations".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Transitioning towards a green and circular economy necessitates a paradigm shift from wastewater treatment to resource recovery. A key priority is the development of sustainable, energy-efficient, and highly selective technologies capable of mining high-value and critical elements from complex wastewater and brine. Such target resources encompass a wide range of valuable components, including, but not limited to, critical minerals (e.g., lithium, iodine, bromine, and rare earth elements) from unconventional produced water or salt lake brines, precious and heavy metals from industrial effluents, and essential nutrients (e.g., phosphorus and nitrogen) from municipal wastewater. This Special Issue highlights cutting-edge developments in green separation materials, novel processes, and integrated strategies. We invite contributions focusing on, but not limited to, the following topics:
- Innovative Process Engineering: Novel designs for efficient resource extraction;
- Advanced Separation Materials: Next-generation adsorbents, membranes, and media for selective recovery;
- Sustainability and Economics: Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Techno-Economic Analysis (TEA) of recovery systems;
- Electrochemical technologies for resource separation and recovery;
- System Integration: Synergistic coupling of multiple technologies or unit operations;
- Unconventional Sources: Recovery of value-added components from unconventional oil and gas produced water (this refers to the highly saline and complex wastewater generated during the extraction of resources like shale gas, tight oil, and coalbed methane via technologies such as directional drilling and hydraulic fracturing).

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Separations is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
