Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Modern biotechnology is based on bioprocesses that allow for the sustainable production of high-value bioproducts such as biofuels, pharmaceuticals, enzymes, biopolymers, and biomaterials. Fundamentally, bioreactors offer a crucial setting for microbial, enzymatic, algal (including microalgae), and cell culture systems, where the conditions of the process significantly impact the yield, productivity, and overall performance. Thus, bioreactors need to be systematically analyzed and optimized to increase process efficiency, facilitate scale-up, and solve issues related to environmental sustainability and economic viability.
This Special Issue, titled “Analysis and Optimization of Bioprocesses in Bioreactors,” aims to highlight recent advances and innovative approaches in the design, modeling, monitoring, and control of bioprocesses. Contributions addressing both fundamental insights and practical applications are welcome, with particular emphasis on strategies that enhance process intensification, integration, and industrial implementations.
Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Modeling, simulation, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) of bioreactor systems.
- Optimization of mass and heat transfer in microbial, enzymatic, algal (including microalgae), and mammalian cell culture processes.
- Novel bioreactor configurations and hybrid technologies.
- Genetic modifications and metabolic engineering in bioprocesses.
- Process intensification and sustainable scale-up strategies.
- Sustainable biorefineries and integration into the circular bioeconomy.
- Bioprocess monitoring, automation, and control, including AI- and machine learning-based approaches.
- Biomedical and pharmaceutical applications of bioreactors.
- Energy-efficient operations and techno-economic or life-cycle assessments.
This Special Issue facilitates interdisciplinary cooperation in bioprocess engineering and serves as a platform for disseminating cutting-edge advancements in this field.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Processes is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
