Algal Biomolecules for Food and Pharmaceutical Innovations: Extraction, Characterization and Applications

This special issue belongs to the section “Natural Products Chemistry“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Algae (both micro and macro algae), are rich resources of diverse bioactive compounds with enormous potential in food and pharmaceutical industries. Algal biomolecules- including polysaccharides, protein, peptides, polyunsaturated fatty acids, pigments, sterols and antioxidants- exhibit diverse functionalities, which meet the growing demands for sustainable, natural, and health promoting products. This special issue 'Algal biomolecules for Food and Pharmaceutical Innovations: Extraction, Characterization and Applications' targets to bring together high-quality contributions focusing on the extraction, analysis and application of algal derived biomolecules in the development of novel food, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical products. Original research articles, reviews and short communications are welcomed in this special issue, addressing recent advances in the following areas:

  • Advanced extraction and purification techniques for algal biomolecules
  • Structural and physiochemical characterization of bioactive compounds
  • Functional and nutraceutical properties of algal biomolecules in food systems
  • Bioactivities eg: antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer and antimicrobial activities
  • Algae based drug delivery systems and bioavailability evaluations
  • Biorefinery approaches and circular economy models for sustainable bioproducts

This special issue aim to display the integration of algal biotechnology with food and pharmaceutical innovations. As a renewable and scalable resource, algae have the potential to be a future sustainable platform for next generation biomolecules addressing global health and nutritional challenges.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Molecules is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
