Ionic Liquids and Molecular Materials: Advances in Functional Interfaces and Applications
This special issue belongs to the section “Physical Chemistry“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Ionic liquids (ILs) have emerged as a versatile class of materials, captivating researchers across chemistry, physics, biology, and material engineering. Their unique physicochemical properties—rooted in their dual ionic and molecular nature—have unlocked new opportunities in the science and engineering of materials. In particular, the interfacial behavior of ILs plays a pivotal role in nanoscale surface science and technology.
A thorough understanding of the bulk, interfacial, and transport properties of ILs is essential for driving innovation in energy storage and conversion systems. Equally important is exploring their integration with molecular materials to develop next-generation functional platforms.
This Special Issue aims to showcase the latest advances in ILs and molecular materials, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange within the global scientific community. We welcome original research and review articles on topics including, but not limited to, the following:
- Physical and chemical characterization of ionic liquids;
- Interfacial nanostructures and wetting behavior of ionic liquid films;
- Transport phenomena and dynamics at functional interfaces;
- Integration of ionic liquid-based materials in energy harvesting and storage technologies;
- Emerging applications in catalysis, sensors, and sustainable materials.
We look forward to your contributions that push the boundaries of this exciting interdisciplinary field.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Molecules is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
