Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue of Metals focuses on studies that describe innovative and original analyses concerning the corrosion and electrochemical performance of structural materials. The detriment in the mechanical properties or the waste of raw materials are among the main consequences of the corrosion. Thus, future efforts should concentrate on better understanding the factors that assist in the development of this phenomenon with the aim of building more sustainable structures. The following is a short description of the several research topics suggested for this Special Issue:

  • The use of electrochemical methods to characterize the corrosion performance in several media, including atmospheric, marine, or high-temperature environments. To include these methodologies to control the in-situ performance in real structures, non-destructive tests are particularly attractive;
  • The assessment of protective methods to prevent and/or lessen the corrosion process, with the final purpose of prolonging the service life of existing and new structures;
  • An analysis of the corrosion mechanisms to establish the nature of the phenomenon;
  • Desirable corrosion reactions, for example, anodizing, to assist the corrosion resistance or for decorative purposes.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Metals is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Surface cladding and coatings are commonly used to protect structures against corrosion in corrosive environments. In this paper, electrochemical properties of friction stir diffusion cladded ASTM A516-70 with corrosion-resistant aluminum alloy grade 5052 are studied. The effect of process parameters, tool rotational and traverse speeds on the corrosion behavior of produced cladded steels was comparatively assessed. Electrochemical analyses revealed that the cladded steel sample provided good corrosion protection performance in comparison with the un-cladded steel substrate following an immersion test of up to 21 days in 3.5% NaCl medium. Increasing the tool traverse speed was found to negatively affect the corrosion resistance. Optimum parameters for the selected cladding system were found to be a 500 rpm tool rotational speed, and a 50 mm/min tool traverse speed for protection against general corrosion. Meanwhile, higher traverse speed demonstrated stable passivation behavior and, therefore, lower propensity for pitting localized corrosion. Post characterization of the exposed area indicated that tool shoulder marks were favorable spots for the accumulation of corrosion products. Full article

Cobalt-based alloys are extensively used in orthopedic applications for joint replacements due to their wear and corrosion resistance. Corrosion, however, is often associated with fatigue failure in these orthopedic devices. In this study, the effect of boron addition on the corrosion behavior of CoCrMo alloys was studied using linear polarization resistance, potentiodynamic polarization curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The samples were analyzed under as-cast and heat treatment conditions after 21 days of immersion in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) solution at 37 °C. The boron addition increased the particle content, while the heat treatment promoted enlargement and even distribution of the precipitates throughout the structure. The corrosion resistance was improved by both boron and heat treatments. The best performance was observed for a heat-treated alloy having a very small amount of boron, which had an increased resistance to corrosive attack. Such behavior was attributed to the homogenized microstructure achieved by boron and heat treatment that helped to form a stable passive layer of chromium oxide which endured the 21 days of immersion. The corrosion behavior of 2205 DSS in HCl solutions containing sulfide were investigated using mass loss test, electrochemical measurements, scanning Kelvin probe, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results showed that Na2S had significant effect on corrosion behavior of 2205 DSS in dilute HCl solutions. Slight Na2S can prevent the passive film from localized attacking of Cl in HCl solution with a concentration lower than 0.1 mol/L. However, when the concentration of HCl solution higher than 0.137 mol/L, Na2S addition will tremendously promote corrosion. The intergranular corrosion combined surficial active dissolution of 2205 DSS could happen in HCl + Na2S solution. Full article
