Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Solidification is an important processing method with extensive use in industrial manufacturing. Most of the complex components are manufactured by casting for many metals. In recent years, solidification has gained novel attraction due to the rapid development of additive manufacturing techniques, where a close control of solidification microstructures is essential for the performance of the product. As a broad science discipline that overlaps areas of material research and condensed matter physics and chemistry, understanding of solidification process is essential for the control of microstructure formation, as well as the final optimization of physical and mechanical properties of metals and their composites.

During past decades, ever-increasing achievements in experimental techniques coupled with new theoretical or simulation developments have resulted in a new level of fundamental aspects of solidification and their application in the casting of metals. This Special Issue is focused on the recent developments of solidification field. The Special Issue also intends to outline the advances in in situ X-ray observations of solidification of metallic alloys, the thermodynamic and kinetics description of solidification process, the atomistic investigation of solid–liquid interfaces , as well as the multi-scale study from nano- up to macroscopic solidification phenomena. All these topics will be covered in additive manufacturing, single crystal casting, welding, supercooling and the other advanced solidification techniques. We invite you to contribute research work concerning new solidification processing methods, new experimental techniques and advanced theoretical models. We believe that these excellent contributions will largely promote this rich area and give a valuable perspective on the expanding of its activity in the metal manufacturing industry.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Metals is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
