New Advances in Friction Stir Welding and Additive Manufacturing

Dear Colleagues,

Our Special Issue is focused on the recent developments in friction stir welding and its derived technologies, including friction stir additive manufacturing, friction stir channeling, deformation-driven metallurgy, etc. These novel technologies are based on the principle of severe plastic deformation and exhibit extraordinary application potential on lightweight metallic materials, sparked with their inherent characteristics encompassing ultrafine-grained microstructures and homogeneously dispersed second phases. Metallic components prepared by friction stir welding and additive manufacturing have demonstrated superior performances in aerospace, astronautics, electric vehicles, and high-speed railways.

This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the latest advances in friction stir welding and its derived technologies. We welcome contributions related to the following topics:

• Friction stir welding of novel and dissimilar materials focused on better load-bearing capacity.
• Novel techniques on friction stir additive manufacturing and remanufacturing, including wire-based friction stir additive manufacturing, additive friction stir deposition, friction rolling additive manufacturing, friction surfacing, etc.
• Friction stir channeling of high-rectangularity channels for thermal management applications.
• Deformation-driven metallurgy of high-performance alloys and metallic composites.
• Friction stir processing for selective modification of large-size components.
• Friction stir incremental forming of complex structures.

We hope that this Special Issue will stimulate further research in the field of friction stir welding and its derived technologies and promote their practical applications in industrial areas.
