Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Over the past few decades, the field of nanocomposites based on polymers has emerged as an interesting interdisciplinary area that embraces material science, chemistry, engineering, nanotechnology, medical science, and biology. The combination of polymers and organic or inorganic nanofillers not only permits the development of new polymeric materials with improved properties with respect to virgin polymers, but it may also intrinsically generate a new set of properties depending on the used nanomaterials. This novel class of hybrid materials is impacting diverse areas including catalysis, sensor development, microelectronics, flame retardancy, surface coating, energy packaging, smart materials, biomaterials, and drug delivery systems. In this Special Issue of Materials, expert researchers are invited to present original papers that consider any advances in Polymers-Based Nanocomposites employed in Biomedical Applications. Special emphasis will be placed on the biocompatibility factor, an important issue which needs to be addressed for specific biomedical applications, such as tissue engineering, biomedical imaging, surgical implants, sutures, drug delivery-based applications, etc.

Potential topics include, without being limited to, the following:

  • Advances in polymers-based nanocomposites preparation;
  • Progress in green polymer nanocomposites production;
  • Morphological characterization;
  • Structure–property relationships in polymer nanocomposites;
  • Molecular dynamics studies of dispersion and aggregation mechanism of nanoparticles in polymer nanocomposites;
  • Biodegradable polymer matrix nanocomposites for tissue engineering;
  • Natural biopolymer-based nanocomposite films for biomedical applications;
  • Metal-based antibacterial substrates;
  • Plasmonic polymer nanocomposites;
  • Cell–polymer nanocomposites’ interaction mechanisms.

Submissions of manuscripts from different fields of research are strongly encouraged.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
