Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The rapid advancement of Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) has fundamentally transformed the landscapes of biometrics and pattern recognition. As our reliance on digital and decentralized environments expands, the demand for robust, highly accurate, and secure identification systems has never been more critical. While modern biometric systems exhibit unprecedented accuracy, they continue to face sophisticated challenges, including vulnerabilities to presentation attacks (spoofing), adversarial machine learning threats, cross-sensor performance degradation, and pressing concerns regarding data privacy and template protection.

This Special Issue, "Machine Learning for Intelligent Biometrics, Pattern Recognition and Secure Identification Systems," aims to provide a premier platform for researchers and practitioners to present cutting-edge innovations that bridge the gap between artificial intelligence and secure identity management. We seek original research papers, comprehensive reviews, and visionary perspectives that leverage advanced machine learning techniques to enhance the intelligence, reliability, and security of biometric systems.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Novel deep learning architectures for feature extraction and pattern recognition
  • Multimodal and cross-modal biometric recognition systems
  • Presentation Attack Detection (PAD) and anti-spoofing mechanisms
  • Behavioral biometrics and continuous authentication paradigms
  • Privacy-preserving ML, federated learning, and secure multi-party computation in biometrics
  • Cancelable biometrics and biometric template protection
  • Adversarial robustness and defense mechanisms in biometric systems
  • Ethical AI, fairness, and bias mitigation in secure identification
  • Real-world implementations and edge-AI for intelligent biometrics

We look forward to receiving your contributions to this exciting and rapidly evolving field.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Machine Learning and Knowledge Extraction is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
