Color Image Processing: Progress and Challenges
This special issue belongs to the section "Color, Multi-spectral, and Hyperspectral Imaging".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Color image processing has seen significant advances in recent decades, driven by improvements in imaging hardware, computational power, and machine learning. From early device-dependent pipelines to modern data-driven approaches, the field has progressed towards perceptually meaningful color representations. Today, the entire pipeline, from raw sensor capture to final display, includes white balance, color transformations, and enhancement, among others, all of which must function consistently across devices with varying gamuts and dynamic ranges.
A crucial requirement is maintaining a close connection to raw sensor data, avoiding early irreversible processes. This allows for more accurate color mapping and consistent displays, helping to sustain a stable visual experience. Nonetheless, balancing physical accuracy with perceptual quality remains challenging, especially as imaging systems and viewing conditions grow more diverse.
A key issue is color constancy, the capability to perceive stable object colors under changing illumination. Although humans do this effortlessly, computational models still face difficulties in complex environments. Classical methods depend on simplifying assumptions, while learning-based approaches enhance performance but often lack interpretability and robustness.
Insights from the human visual system, particularly adaptation mechanisms, are vital for developing effective algorithms for white balance and color constancy. These challenges are heightened in extended reality (XR), where real and virtual content must be seamlessly combined. Future advancements depend on integrating physics-based models with perceptual insights to deliver consistent and immersive color experiences.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Imaging is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
