Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Lipid nanoparticles represent an established means of potent nucleic acid delivery, with demonstrated clinical success in applications including siRNA therapies and mRNA vaccines and an expanding preclinical pipeline across a wide variety of indications. As the interest in utilizing lipid nanoparticles for a broader range of applications grows, potential challenges—including limitations in targeting and toxicity—have emerged, alongside exciting new frontiers for platform development, including theragnostics and multi-drug delivery. These obstacles and opportunities have ultimately inspired the exploration of new approaches to enhance and expand lipid nanoparticle functions.
To highlight these advances, this Special Issue, “Multifunctional Lipid Nanoparticles for Drug Delivery and Targeted Therapy”, will focus on platforms that go beyond traditional delivery. Its scope covers, but is not limited to, the development of lipid nanoparticles that
- Modulate or leverage biological responses;
- Achieve the delivery of multiple cargos;
- Incorporate bio-responsive materials;
- Utilize innovative targeting strategies, including intracellular targeting;
- Include imaging or theragnostic components;
- Feature new approaches to lipid nanoparticle design.
We aim to publish work on current and emerging lipid nanoparticle systems that utilize cutting-edge strategies to enhance therapeutic delivery. By featuring a variety of approaches to improving lipid nanoparticle performance across different applications, this Special Issue will offer a comprehensive perspective on developing technologies to inform the next generation of lipid nanoparticle researchers. It is our pleasure to invite you to contribute original research articles, reviews, or communications for consideration for this exciting Special Issue.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Functional Biomaterials is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
