Accelerated, Partial Breast Irradiation

Dear Colleagues,

Accelerated, Partial Breast Irradiation (APBI) has progressed from investigator-initiated studies to Phase III randomized clinical trials over the last 20 years. Preliminary results in most of these trials indicate that for appropriately selected patients, APBI offers an effective reduction in local tumor recurrence compared with whole breast irradiation without harming survival. There are several key questions that will impact the future offering/expansion of APBI. The purpose of this Special Issue is to explore these issues so that we may best identify patients who will benefit from APBI and how use of APBI may benefit our overall use of health care resources. We invite authors to submit manuscripts that address these important questions. Potential topics include, but are not limited to: has APBI improved utilization of breast conservation versus mastectomy; how do we resolve Phase III trial results regarding cosmetic results after APBI; comparing/contrasting current and/or potential new technology to deliver APBI; integration of APBI with newer forms of breast-conserving surgery, such as those using oncoplastic techniques; comparing merits and outcomes of APBI versus those offered with hypofractionated radiotherapy; have we definitively identified optimal candidates for APBI; potential cost reductions and improved utilization of health care resources with use of APBI; and so forth. Investigators in the field of APBI are encouraged to submit an original article or review to this Special Issue.

Publication costs may be defrayed in part or full at the discretion of the Journal and Guest Editor. If this is sought, please also submit a request to defray publication costs at the time of abstract submission along with the reason for the request.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
