Dear Colleagues,
Retinal vascular disorders are health conditions that affect the retinal vessels and can lead to reduced vision or visual loss. These disorders arise from various underlying conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, atherosclerosis, coagulation abnormalities, and autoimmune diseases. The pathological processes occurring in the retina can damage the retinal arteries, resulting in vessel occlusion. Retinal vessel occlusion leads to retinal ischemia and the breakdown of the blood–retinal barrier (BRB), which leads to excessive vascular leakage. Severe retinal ischemia can lead to retinal neovascularization that extends into the vitreous cavity, which may result in traction retinal detachment. The diseases associated with this phenomenon are referred to as ischemic retinopathies and include retinal vein occlusions (RVOs), diabetic retinopathy, retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), and sickle cell retinopathy. An increased level of inflammation and inflammatory mediators has been detected in retinas or vitreous obtained from patients with pathological retinal neovascularization. The advancement of novel therapeutic strategies for retinal neovascularization is constrained due to insufficient understanding of its pathogenesis. A comprehensive analysis of changes in cellular signaling is necessary to comprehend the morphological and functional changes evident in various proliferative retinopathies.
This Special Issue, entitled “Molecular-Level Insights into Retinal Vascular Disorders”, solicits original research articles and thorough reviews concerning the influence of growth factors, cytokines, chemokines, interleukins, and the signaling pathways they regulate in the advancement of retinal vascular diseases, including diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions, retinopathy of prematurity, and sickle cell retinopathy.
