Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Angiogenesis—the formation of new blood vessels from preexisting vasculature—is a fundamental biological process that plays a critical role in embryonic development, tissue regeneration, wound healing, and various pathological conditions, most notably cancer. This Special Issue welcomes original research articles and reviews that collectively explore the dynamic and complex nature of angiogenesis from molecular, cellular, and systemic perspectives.

A central theme of the issue is the role of pro-angiogenic molecules, including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), fibroblast growth factors (FGFs), angiopoietins, and other signaling mediators. These factors are pivotal in modulating endothelial cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation, orchestrating the initiation and maintenance of new vascular networks. Emerging regulatory pathways involving non-coding RNAs, metabolic modulators, and extracellular vesicles are also highlighted for their increasingly recognized roles in fine-tuning angiogenic responses.

Equally emphasized are advancements in angiogenesis analysis techniques, ranging from traditional histological and immunohistochemical methods to high-resolution in vivo imaging, single-cell transcriptomics, and quantitative computational modeling. These tools have enabled more precise characterization of vascular architecture and function, enhancing our ability to decipher spatial–temporal patterns of vascular growth in both physiological and pathological contexts.

The Special Issue also delves into the principles of vascular morphogenesis, exploring how mechanical forces, cellular interactions, and extracellular matrix dynamics contribute to the formation of hierarchically organized vascular networks. Understanding these morphogenetic cues is crucial not only for decoding developmental angiogenesis but also for informing tissue engineering and regenerative medicine strategies.

A significant portion of the Special Issue is dedicated to the role of angiogenesis in cancer biology, where tumors co-opt angiogenic pathways to secure a blood supply, sustain growth, and facilitate metastasis. Articles discuss the tumor microenvironment, hypoxia-driven angiogenesis, and resistance to anti-angiogenic therapies, offering new perspectives on therapeutic targeting and biomarker discovery.

This Special Issue bridging insights across basic science, translational research, and clinical application provides a state-of-the-art overview of angiogenesis. Its aim is to inspire novel therapeutic approaches and deepen our understanding of vascular biology in health and disease.
