Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The construction and infrastructure sector is a major contributor to the global economy. However, traditional project management in these fields faces numerous challenges, including cost overruns, schedule delays, safety risks, productivity inefficiencies, and information fragmentation. These issues continue to hinder the successful delivery of construction and infrastructure projects.
Artificial intelligence (AI) seeks to replicate human behaviors—such as learning, reasoning, decision-making, and problem-solving—through machines and computer systems. AI technologies include machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, knowledge engineering, computer vision, robotics, and more. These technologies can perform complex tasks historically undertaken only by humans.
AI is increasingly transforming various industries, and construction and infrastructure are no exceptions. The integration of AI into project management in these sectors offers significant benefits, such as enhanced decision-making, improved planning and control, and more effective problem-solving. AI has the potential to revolutionize construction and infrastructure project management.
This Special Issue aims to address the traditional challenges in construction and infrastructure project management by exploring AI-powered solutions. We invite original research original research, literature reviews, and case studies that focus on the application of AI in project within the construction and infrastructure domains. This platform seeks to share cutting-edge research and practical insights in this emerging field.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following topics:
- AI-powered cost planning and control in construction and infrastructure projects;
- AI applications in construction and infrastructure project scheduling;
- AI-enhanced health and safety management in construction projects;
- AI-driven lifecycle management of infrastructure project assets;
- Human–AI interaction for decision-making in construction projects;
- The role of AI in construction and infrastructure project leadership;
- Addressing the complexity of megaproject management using AI;
- AI solutions for smart and sustainable infrastructure project development;
- Leveraging AI for integrated project delivery in construction and infrastructure;
- AI-assisted optimization for construction supply chain management.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Intelligent Infrastructure and Construction is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1000 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
