Cell Death and Its Clearance in Health and Disease

Dear Colleagues,

Billions of cells die every day as part of normal tissue homeostasis. The prompt and efficient clearance of these dying cells by phagocytes is essential for maintaining immune tolerance and preventing pathological inflammation. This process ensures that cell turnover proceeds without triggering immune activation or tissue disruption. Defective clearance has been linked to the development and progression of a range of diseases, including chronic inflammatory disorders, autoimmunity, and cancer. Despite significant advances in our understanding of regulated cell death pathways, the molecular and cellular mechanisms governing the recognition and removal of dying cells under both physiological and pathological conditions remain incompletely understood.

This Special Issue aims to highlight recent developments in the field, with a focus on the regulation of cell death, its resolution by phagocytes, and the broader implications for tissue homeostasis and disease pathogenesis.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Cells is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
