Type 2 Diabetes: Cellular and Molecular Pathophysiology
This special issue belongs to the section “Cellular Pathology“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is one of the most common metabolic disorders worldwide, and its development is primarily caused by a combination of two main factors: defective insulin secretion by pancreatic β-cells and the inability of insulin-sensitive tissues, such as muscle, adipose, and liver, to respond to insulin. Glucose homeostasis requires a tight regulation between glycemia and insulin synthesis, release, and activity. Defects in any of these processes can lead to a metabolic imbalance responsible for the development of impaired glucose regulation. This Special Issue offers an open access forum that aims to bring together a collection of original research and review articles addressing our expanding knowledge of the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie the progression from normal glucose tolerance to T2D. We hope to provide a useful resource for understanding the various factors that affect glucose homeostasis, some of which could ultimately be used in the development of better prediction models for the disease, or could potentially serve as therapeutic targets. Suggested potential topics include new metabolic pathways for the development of T2D, the impact of obesity on T2D, the beta cell, lessons learned from monogenic diabetes, and the pathophysiology of T2D complications.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Cells is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
