Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Lung and kidney functions are intimately related under both physiological and pathological conditions as is evident from their organic similarities in the miniaturization of structures (alveoli in lungs and nephrons in kidneys),their overlapping and complex vectorial transport mechanisms, and their regulatory factors that aid together in maintaining the body homeostasis. Injury to one organ disturbs this homeostasis, and in turn, causes severe repercussions to the other organ. Thus, understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the damage caused by disease or infection helps in not only improving diagnostic processes, but also improving therapeutic management. This Special Issue of Cells, titled “Kidney and Lung Disorders: The Role of Tubular and Alveolar Epithelia in Health, Disease, Infection, and Organ Crosstalk”, aims at covering a diverse landscape of tubular and alveolar epithelial functions in physiological and pathological conditions. We welcome contributions in the form of original research articles and reviews that cover, but are not limited to, the following topics:

  1. Tubular/alveolar transport mechanisms in health and disease.
  2. Roles of intracellular signaling, ATP, and hypoxia on tubular and alveolar transporters.
  3. Renal tubular disorders, RTA, CKD, and AKI.
  4. Alveolar lung diseases, pulmonary edema, COPD, asthma, and ALI.
  5. Pathophysiology of microbial infections in kidneys and lungs.
  6. Diagnostics and therapeutic management of renal and pulmonary diseases.
  7. Compensation and crosstalk.
