Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the landscape of neurodegenerative disorder research, offering new avenues for early diagnosis, disease monitoring, and personalized treatment strategies. From leveraging deep learning for imaging-based biomarker detection to predictive modeling for disease progression, AI is reshaping our understanding and management of conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and other neurodegenerative disorders.

This Special Issue aims to highlight the latest advancements in AI applications for neurodegenerative disorders, addressing key challenges, opportunities, and future directions. We invite original research, reviews, and case studies that contribute to the growing field of AI-driven innovations in neurology. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • AI-powered diagnostics: development and validation of machine learning models for early and accurate detection of neurodegenerative diseases using neuroimaging, genomics, and clinical data.
  • Predictive modeling for disease progression: AI-driven approaches to forecasting disease trajectory, enabling timely interventions and improved patient management.
  • Neuroimaging and AI integration: applications of AI in MRI, PET, and CT analysis for detecting structural and functional changes in the brain.
  • Personalized treatment strategies: AI-assisted decision support systems for optimizing pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment plans.
  • Wearable technology and digital biomarkers: AI-driven analysis of data from wearable sensors and digital health applications for continuous monitoring of motor and cognitive functions.
  • AI in neurodegenerative research: the role of AI in accelerating drug discovery, identifying novel therapeutic targets, and repurposing existing drugs.
  • Ethical considerations and regulatory challenges: addressing bias, transparency, and patient privacy in, and clinical integration of, AI in neurology.

This Special Issue provides a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration among neuroscientists, radiologists, clinicians, AI researchers, and data scientists. We encourage submissions that offer novel insights, methodologies, and real-world applications that advance the field of AI in neurodegenerative disorders. All submissions should adhere to the journal’s guidelines and will undergo a rigorous peer-review process.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Bioengineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
