Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The field of regenerative medicine and biomedical engineering stands at a transformative precipice, driven by the unprecedented capabilities of advanced biofabrication technologies. Moving beyond traditional manufacturing limitations, techniques such as 3D bioprinting, electrospinning, and volumetric additive manufacturing are empowering researchers to engineer biological constructs with intricate, patient-specific architectures. This paradigm shift promises to redefine our approach to healing, moving from merely repairing tissue to genuinely regenerating it. The convergence of these fabrication strategies with breakthroughs in smart biomaterials, stem cell biology, and computational design is accelerating the development of next-generation therapeutic solutions.

The aim of this Special Issue, "Advanced Biofabrication for Next-Generation Biomedical Devices and Tissues," is to curate a collection of high-quality research articles and reviews that highlight the cutting-edge innovations at the forefront of this dynamic field. We seek to showcase work that not only demonstrates technical prowess but also pushes the boundaries of functionality, biocompatibility, and clinical translation. This Special Issue will serve as a comprehensive platform for disseminating pioneering research that bridges the critical gap between conceptual design and tangible, functional biomedical products.

The scope of this Special Issue encompasses, but is not limited to, the following key areas:

  1. Novel Biofabrication Technologies: Development and application of advanced 3D printing/bio-printing modalities (e.g., multi-material, high-resolution, in situ printing) and hybrid fabrication platforms for creating complex tissue constructs and sophisticated medical devices.
  2. Innovative Biomaterials: Design of next-generation smart biomaterials with tailored mechanical, chemical, and biological properties, including stimuli-responsive, conductive, and self-healing materials for enhanced integration and functionality.
  3. Engineering Complex Tissues and Organ Models: Strategies for the biofabrication of vascularized, innervated, and multi-cellular tissues, as well as advanced in vitro models (organ-on-a-chip, disease models) for drug screening and pathophysiological studies.
  4. Next-Generation Biomedical Devices: Fabrication of patient-specific implants, scaffolds, and smart medical devices with enhanced bio-integration, drug-delivery capabilities, and diagnostic functions.
  5. Translational and Clinical Studies: Pre-clinical and clinical studies demonstrating the safety, efficacy, and real-world application of biofabricated constructs and devices.

We invite original research articles, comprehensive reviews, and perspective papers that contribute to the advancement of biofabrication science and technology. By bringing together diverse expertise, this Special Issue aims to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and accelerate the development of groundbreaking solutions that will shape the future of medicine.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Bioengineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
