Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Tissue engineering is at a pivotal moment, with bioreactors at the heart of its evolution. As the demand for functional, implantable tissues grows, so does the need for advanced bioreactor technologies capable of mimicking the complexity of the human body. In recent years, the field has seen a surge in innovative bioreactor systems that integrate perfusion, mechanical stimulation, biochemical gradients, and real-time monitoring—bringing engineered tissues closer than ever to clinical translation.
This Special Issue, Advancements in Bioreactors for Tissue Engineering, aims at bringing together the latest breakthroughs in bioreactor design and application. We invite contributions that push the boundaries of how bioreactors cultivate complex tissues, including skin, cardiac, vascular, liver, cartilage, bone, lung, and prostate. We are particularly interested in emerging frontiers bridging the gap between traditional tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
Yet, despite these advancements, major hurdles remain. How can we ensure scalable and reproducible tissue production? How do we integrate real-time, non-destructive monitoring to assess tissue quality and function? Can we harness computational fluid modeling to dynamically adapt bioreactor conditions to evolving tissue needs? Addressing these challenges is crucial for transitioning engineered tissues from the lab to the clinic.
This Special Issue invites researchers from bioengineering, bioprocessing, and regenerative medicine to share their cutting-edge work and bold ideas. We seek original research articles and comprehensive reviews that explore the following topics:
- Innovative bioreactor designs for scalable tissue production;
- Advanced perfusion and mechanical stimulation strategies to enhance tissue maturation;
- Real-time monitoring and sensing technologies for assessing tissue functionality;
- Integration of bioprocess principles into tissue engineering workflows;
- Computational modeling approaches to optimize bioreactor performance;
- In vivo bioreactors as next-generation strategies for tissue development.
By bringing together pioneering research, this Special Issue aims at accelerating the development of bioreactor technologies that will shape the future of tissue engineering. Join us in driving innovation and bringing engineered tissues closer to real-world applications!
We look forward to your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Bioengineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
