Greenhouse Gas Processes and Mitigation in Agricultural and Forest Systems
This special issue belongs to the section "Air Quality".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Agricultural and forest ecosystems are major sources and sinks of greenhouse gases (GHGs), including carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. These ecosystems play an essential role in regulating atmospheric composition and mitigating anthropogenic climate change. Land use change, management practices, and climate variability significantly affect GHG production, emission, transport, and deposition processes. However, the biogeochemical mechanisms, spatiotemporal patterns, controlling factors, and mitigation potential of GHG fluxes in these ecosystems remain incompletely understood at regional and global scales. Robust observations, process‑based experiments, and numerical models are urgently needed to quantify GHG dynamics and develop effective mitigation strategies.
This Special Issue focuses on GHG biogeochemical processes and mitigation strategies in agricultural and forest systems. It also focuses on the mechanisms of GHG emissions from freeze–thaw cycles in cold and seasonally frozen agricultural soils, which are crucial for understanding GHG fluxes under specific climatic conditions. We welcome high-quality original research, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and modeling studies. The scope covers GHG source–sink dynamics, measurement techniques, emission estimation, management impacts, soil–plant–atmosphere interactions, and low-carbon best management practices.
The purpose of this Special Issue is to promote scientific understanding of GHG processes and provide science-based solutions for GHG mitigation. It aims to support climate-smart management and sustainable development of agricultural and forest ecosystems under global change.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Atmosphere is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
