Mathematical Approaches for Structural Mechanics: Theory, Algorithms and Applications
This special issue belongs to the section "Computational and Numerical Mathematics".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Mathematical methods provide the basis for analyzing deformation, vibration, stability, and failure in engineering structures. Nonlinear behavior, material heterogeneity (including fractures and pores), and interactions with thermal and hydraulic processes raise questions about model formulation, solution accuracy, and computational efficiency. Analytical approaches and numerical methods address these questions at different scales, from material behavior to structural performance. The use of learning-based models also calls for mathematical analysis of approximation error, stability, and consistency with governing physical laws. This Special Issue invites original research and review articles on the theory, algorithms, and applications of mathematical methods in structural mechanics. Contributions that connect mathematical developments with clearly defined problems in material and structural engineering are particularly welcome. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: analytical and numerical methods for structural deformation, vibration, buckling, and stability; mathematical characterization of cracks, fracture networks, and pore structures, along with their effects on mechanical behavior; fractal geometry and scaling laws in material and structural engineering; constitutive modeling, homogenization, and multiscale analysis of heterogeneous materials; partial differential equations and solution methods for coupled thermal, hydraulic, and mechanical processes; variational and nonlocal approaches to damage, fracture, and structural failure; inverse problems, uncertainty quantification, and structural optimization; and physics-informed learning and operator learning for structural analysis, including convergence and error estimation.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. AppliedMath is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
