Zoo Animals

Section Information

The journal Animals is a peer-reviewed scientific journal that publishes reviews, research articles and communications dealing with the biology, health, and care of animals, as well as with the relationship between animals and humans. The section “Zoo animals” will focus on wild animals under human care. Zoological institutions—including zoos and aquaria—play a key role in wildlife conservation, through breeding programs, scientific research, fundraising, and public education. Animal welfare is now widely recognized as being of paramount importance for zoological institutions, and much progress has been made over the last few years in our understanding of the welfare need of zoo animals, as well as on how zoo animal welfare can be assessed using science-based criteria. The section “Zoo animals” will cover all aspects related with the welfare, husbandry, and veterinary care of zoo animals, as well as with the contribution of zoological institutions to conservation. Papers on the ethical issues that are relevant to zoos and aquaria are also welcome.
