AI in Bioinformatics: The Next Frontier in Health Discovery
This special issue belongs to the section "Medical & Healthcare AI".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue focuses on the synergy between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and High-Performance Bioinformatics. In particular, it specifically targets the computational efficiency and scalability of these models when applied to massive, real-world health datasets.
We invite original research and reviews that address, but are not limited to, the following areas:
- Scalable AI algorithms: machine learning and deep learning architectures optimized for large-scale genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic data;
- High-Performance bio-computing: the use of GPU acceleration, parallel computing, and distributed systems to power AI-driven biological discovery;
- Precision medicine and diagnostics: AI models for variant calling, drug discovery, and personalized treatment plans that demonstrate clinical relevance;
- Integrative multi-omics: novel AI frameworks capable of fusing heterogeneous biological data (e.g., DNA sequence + clinical imaging) for holistic health assessment;
- Efficient software tools: the development of tools that reduce the memory and time footprint of AI-based bioinformatics pipelines.
This Special Issue’s purpose is to move beyond theoretical accuracy to focus on computational sustainability, ensuring that the next generation of AI tools in bioinformatics can keep pace with the exponential growth of biological data in health research.
How this Special Issue relates to and improves upon the current literature:
- From theory to scalability: this Special Issue supplements the field by focusing on performance and scalability (the “how”), filling a gap often ignored in general bioinformatics journals;
- Addressing the “Big Data” bottleneck: While many publications showcase AI success on small, curated datasets, this Special Issue prioritizes research that tackles the computational bottleneck of processing thousands of whole-genome sequences (WGSs), which is a critical requirement for modern public health projects.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. AI is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
