Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue aims to explore the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in redefining software engineering practices and advancing web technologies. The focus of the issue is on innovative AI-driven methods, tools, and frameworks that can automate or enhance software design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance, as well as intelligent web systems and services that improve user experience, automation, and decision-making. The scope encompasses cutting-edge topics such as AI-assisted software development, predictive analytics for software quality, intelligent web frameworks, natural language interfaces, generative AI for code synthesis, and adaptive web architectures. The purpose of this issue is to bring together multidisciplinary research that bridges the gap between AI innovation and practical software and web engineering applications, fostering a dialogue between academia and industry.

This Special Issue will build on and extend existing literature by emphasizing the sustainable and socio-technical dimensions of AI adoption in software and web ecosystems. In particular, it aims to emphasize how AI technologies can contribute to sustainability through energy-efficient computing, responsible AI deployment, and the development of sustainable, scalable, and ethically aligned digital systems. Contributions that address sustainability challenges (for example, reducing the environmental footprint of software systems, promoting inclusive access to intelligent web services, and integrating AI tools for sustainable digital transformation) are especially encouraged. Through this lens, the Special Issue aligns with the journal’s mission to advance scientific, socio-economic, and policy-oriented discussions on sustainable development and responsible innovation.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • AI-assisted software design, testing, and maintenance;
  • Machine learning and deep learning for software analytics;
  • Generative AI and large language models for software engineering;
  • Automated code generation, debugging, and optimization;
  • AI-based project management and software process improvement;
  • Intelligent web systems and adaptive user interfaces;
  • AI-enhanced cybersecurity and privacy in web applications;
  • Sustainable software engineering practices and energy-efficient computing;
  • Responsible and ethical AI applications in software and web development;
  • Human-AI collaboration and explainability in software engineering tools;
  • Data-driven DevOps and continuous software delivery;
  • AI for accessibility and inclusivity in web technologies.

We invite researchers, practitioners, and industry experts to submit high-quality original research articles that align with the themes of this Special Issue.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. AI is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
