Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue concerns virtual teams and we are looking for researchers interested in publishing articles on this topic. While there is little consensus on a definition, there is a general convergence concerning the characteristics of virtual teams, such as working electronically, using computers, not being collocated with other team members, working remotely, and so on. A simple example of a definition including some of these characteristics is the following: virtual teams are teams of people who primarily interact electronically and who meet face-to-face infrequently or, in some cases, not at all.

Based on advances in technology, the potential for virtual teamwork has become increasingly possible. Examples of such technology include end-user devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops, along with electronic meeting software, such as Adobe Connect, GoToMeeting, Skype, WebEX, among others, in addition to simple email, document creation software, and analytical software. The aforesaid technologies, when combined with the ubiquity of the Internet and ongoing globalization, enable many teamwork activities to be accomplished electronically without the need for face-to-face interactions. As with teams in general, there are many aspects of virtual teams to research, such as activities or tasks, communication, culture, isolation, language, leadership, performance, personality types, technology, and trust.
