Electrical Actuators for High-Efficiency and Low-Emission Powertrains and Vehicle Testbeds

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of key technologies associated with electrical actuators used in eco-friendly internal combustion engines, powertrain systems and vehicle testbeds. Electrical actuators have become essential in these applications due to their high precision, efficiency and adaptability. By converting electrical energy into mechanical motion, these actuators enable precise control over critical systems such as in fuel injection, throttle position, valve timing, the operation of aftertreatment systems and exhaust gas recirculation. In engine testing and development environments, electrical actuators play a pivotal role in replicating real-world operating conditions, enhancing engine performance and ensuring compliance with stringent emission standards. To this end, this Special Issue highlights recent advancements in actuator technologies for the following purposes: managing air intake systems; controlling fuel injection timing and volume for optimized combustion; adjusting valve timing for improved engine efficiency and performance; regulating EGR flow to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions; controlling turbo boost pressure to enhance engine performance; managing gear shifts and clutch operations in automatic and semi-automatic transmissions; regulating coolant flow to maintain optimal engine temperatures using electronic thermostats and multi-way coolant control valves; simulating dynamic loads and operating conditions for powertrain and engine testing; integrating machine learning for intelligent actuation and control; and managing various aftertreatment devices for emission control.
