Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to invite you to submit high-quality contributions to a Special Issue of Actuators titled “Smart Structures and Precision Engineering for Space Systems: A Special Issue in Honor of Prof. Dr. André Preumont”. This Special Issue is dedicated to celebrating the exceptional scientific contributions of Prof. Dr. André Preumont, whose work has had a profound and lasting impact on mechanical engineering, space systems, active structures, and robotics.
Prof. Dr. Preumont is a distinguished expert in vibration control and the active damping of space structures, adaptive/active optics, and flapping wing robots. His pioneering research has significantly advanced the fields of smart structures and precision engineering, greatly influencing aerospace applications and robotic technologies. As a professor of Mechanical Engineering and Robotics at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and the director of the Active Structures Laboratory, Prof. Preumont’s work continues to inspire both academic and industrial innovations. He is the author of seven books, a member of the Belgian Royal Academy, and a member of the French Académie de l’Air et de l’Espace (AAE). In recognition of his contributions, he received the Alexander von Humboldt Research Award in 2011 (Darmstadt, Germany). Prof. Preumont has also served as a visiting professor at Virginia Tech (USA), UT Compiègne and INSA Lyon (France), and Politecnico di Milano (Italy). He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).
We invite original research articles, review papers, and technical notes on the following topics:
- Smart structures and precision engineering for space systems;
- Active control and damping techniques in aerospace applications;
- Active optics and their applications in space missions;
- Structural health monitoring in space systems;
- Flying robots and their potential for space exploration;
- Advanced materials and manufacturing methods for space systems.
Additionally, we welcome contributions that explore the broader impact of Prof. Preumont’s work on space systems, robotics, mechanical engineering, and its influence on future technological advancements.
We look forward to receiving your valuable contributions for this Special Issue, which will serve as a tribute to Prof. Preumont’s outstanding contributions to science and engineering.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Actuators is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
