Cover Story: Learning objectives are widely assumed to guide medical students’ studying, planning, and self-assessment, yet little empirical work has examined how students actually use them in practice. This mixed-methods study contrasted educator-endorsed strategies identified through a scoping review with student-described practices derived from qualitative focus groups with pre-clerkship medical students. Findings revealed that students used learning objectives selectively and adaptively, most often after learning events for self-testing, gap identification, and content triage. The study also identified learner-driven, technology-enabled adaptations, including AI-assisted question generation and flashcard conversion, highlighting meaningful gaps between educator assumptions and student learning realities. View this paper
