Cover Story: In the early 1960s, Drs. Hungate and Bryant laid the foundation for the field of rumen microbiology, emphasizing the need to explore the intricate ecosystem of the rumen within ruminant animals. This environment, known as the rumen microbiome, is comprised of a diverse set of microorganisms, including bacteria, archaea, protozoa, and fungi. These microorganisms play a pivotal role in the digestion and fermentation of complex plant material. Next-generation sequencing has allowed for a deeper insight into the abundance and diversity of these microorganisms. By understanding rumen microbiology, we are able to unravel the microbial ecosystem to optimize ruminant health, nutrition, and environmental sustainability. View this paper
