After the strong success of the previous edition, the 2nd International Electronic Conference on Machines and Applications (IECMA 2024) was held online from 18 to 20 June 2024. Machinery and engineering areas play a key role in an ever-increasing technological society. Transportation, renewable energies, and more efficient buildings are only some of the domains where the intensive application of these systems has been noticed the most. In all these applications, efficiency and reliability, automation and control, and advanced manufacturing are of major concern. The scope of this online conference was to bring together well-known worldwide experts in the fields of machinery and engineering while providing an online forum for presenting and discussing the latest results within such fields. The present report will start by providing an overview of the keynote speeches and the main axes around which the oral sessions were organized. Then, the topics addressed in the detailed abstracts submitted to the IECMA 2024 are presented. Full article

Additive manufacturing (AM) is transforming healthcare by facilitating the production of highly customized medical devices and equipment. This review systematically examines various AM technologies, including stereolithography, selective laser sintering, and fused deposition modeling. Methodologically, the review involves a comprehensive analysis of the current literature, case studies, and technological advancements in AM. It highlights the applications of these technologies in creating patient-specific implants, prosthetics, anatomical models, surgical guides, and drug delivery systems. The findings reveal that AM technologies enable the fabrication of complex geometries and tailored devices that align with individual patient anatomies, leading to improved patient outcomes and enhanced surgical precision. The review also addresses key challenges, such as regulatory hurdles, material biocompatibility, and cost considerations. Additionally, it explores recent advancements in bioprinting and the development of innovative materials that support patient-centered healthcare solutions. The findings underscore AM’s transformative potential in advancing medical care and its significant impact on patient outcomes and surgical efficiency. Full article

Learning the Buckled Geometry of 3D Printed Stiffeners of Pre-Stretched Soft Membranes

A deep learning strategy was exploited to learn and predict the deformation of stiffeners, 3D printed onto a pre-stretched soft membrane. The working process reads as follows: the membrane is stretched until a pre-defined level; a specific geometry of stiffeners is printed onto it; the membrane is finally released, and due to the presence of the printed stiffeners, the system undergoes an out-of-plane deformation due to buckling. Fused deposition modeling was specifically calibrated to print PLA (Polylactic acid or polylactide) on a Lycra fabric. To assess how the printed pattern affects the buckled configuration, samples featuring different dimensions and in-plane geometries of the stiffeners were printed and numerically modeled via finite elements (FEs). The calibrated model was next exploited to construct a larger training dataset of stiffener geometries. A pre-trained You Only Look Once (YOLO)-based digital model was finally trained to foresee the link between the in-plane dimensions of the stiffeners before the release and the out-of-plane displacements in the buckled configuration. By handling around 100 different patterns, a precision of 93% in terms of recognition of the in-plane dimensions of the stiffeners and a mean absolute percentage error of 5% at most in terms of an estimate of the features of the buckled configuration were attained. The reported results testify the capability of the proposed approach and its potential efficiency to optimize the shape of the 3D printed geometries. Full article

In this study, to further clarify the advantages of industrial applications of wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM), the focus is on the repair of blades damaged by cavitation erosion using WAAM. A fan-type inducer was installed in a centrifugal pump experimental apparatus, and then paint erosion tests were conducted. Based on the tests, the fabrication time for repairing blades with a hybrid system of WAAM and machining was calculated and compared with that for fabricating a new part. It is concluded that applying WAAM to the fabrication process of an industrial turbopump has advantages not only in the manufacture of parts but also in the repair of such parts. Full article

This article focuses on the analysis and non-invasive online diagnostics of the operating condition of bearings integrated into three-phase squirrel cage induction motors, an electric machine that, due to its construction and operational characteristics, has a significant presence in the industry. The proposed signal-processing analysis tool is based on the non-invasive monitoring of stator electrical currents. To improve robustness in the diagnosis of bearing faults beyond the state-of-the-art, a hybrid approach was employed. The Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) and Park’s Vector Approach (PVA) were combined and applied to the stator currents. This hybridization allowed the benefits of both methods to be combined: (i) proper evaluation of time-varying phenomena and (ii) the ability to distinguish the type of fault affecting the bearing. To demonstrate the feasibility of the approach, comparisons were made between the proposed hybrid technique and both the STFT and the Extended Park’s Vector Approach (EPVA), which have been previously considered in the diagnosis of these and other induction motor faults. The validation of the proposed solution was conducted through computational simulations and laboratory tests, ultimately aiming to generate a database of results to inform future research in this area. To emulate bearing failures in an experimental context, artificial damage to bearing components was introduced. Full article

This study aimed to calculate the impact of inlet valve geometry and spray angle on the performance of internal combustion engines using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. CFD analysis was performed to explore the fuel flow dynamics within a combustion chamber at critical stages, considering factors such as swirl and tumble. This study investigated the role of the intake port’s geometry and spray angles in creating squish and swirl, which is crucial for enhancing combustion efficiency and overall engine performance. The analysis employed the Finite Volume Method (FVM), solved within ANSYS Fluent 2021 software, utilizing the standard k-ε turbulence model. Design Modeler was used for the geometry design and ANSYS Fluent facilitated the CFD analysis of the injection. Four distinct cases were explored to assess engine performance across various designs, examining parameters such as pressure, temperature, and velocity. These performance parameters were evaluated against the existing literature, enabling the identification of optimal configurations. This study identified optimal performance parameters based on the existing literature. The best design was further validated against existing designs under identical boundary conditions. This research demonstrates improved engine performance across all parameters compared to existing values in the literature. This suggests the efficacy of the proposed inlet valve geometry and spray angle configurations in increasing internal combustion engine efficiency. Full article

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science that deals with the adoption of human behavioral elements in computer-based systems. Some of these systems support learning, understanding, making inferences, and adaptability. In recent years, artificial intelligence has brought a rapid technological revolution to many different sectors of industry. It is a tool that can greatly influence the different stages of the design process. In this particular study, the goal was to integrate AI into the design process of a product, and more specifically of a soccer shoe, using additive manufacturing technology as a prototyping method. Different stages to be followed during the design of a product include mind mapping, digital sketches, Computer-Aided Design (CAD), rendering, and prototyping, both digital and physical. By integrating AI tools into the traditional design process, designers can enhance the outcomes of their final products through the use of automation and control systems based on a holistic approach to industrial design. This paper introduces a distinct and innovative design framework that combines the benefits of AI digital applications with the expertise of the designer. The proposed design methodology will be used to create a prototype of the designed soccer shoe using rapid prototyping tools for user feedback on its form. The conclusions of the study are that AI is a tool that can be integrated into the design process of a product, improving it, while at the same time supporting the designers’ creativity and innovation.
