Cover Story: The use of water as a medium is gaining momentum for the design of supramolecular devices. The behaviour of photomodulable molecules in water can be modified by the presence of host units providing a higher level of molecular control. The recognition properties in water of β-cyclodextrin towards bis-cationic water soluble dithienylethene photomodulable units were thoroughly investigated. In particular, a better binding for the open with respect to the closed forms was observed, with a larger difference for derivatives bearing a perfluorinated cyclopentenyl unit rather than the aliphatic one.
