Cover Story: Fragments of a high-quality copy of “The Great Holy Family of Francis I” (Raphael, 1508, now in the Louvre) were examined at the Cologne Institute for Conservation. Little information was available about their provenance, and their ownership prior to 1950 was unknown. A comprehensive technical and material analysis was carried out to assist with dating and provenance research. Based on the characterisation of pigments, binders, additives, and canvas fibres, the radiocarbon dating of the lead white pigment, oil binder, and canvas fibres, and the lead stable isotope study, it was determined with a high degree of probability that the copy was created in Northern Europe between the late 16th and mid-17th centuries. This corresponds with the display of the original in the “Haute Chapelle” or the “Cabinet des Peintures” in Fontainebleau. View this paper
