Cover Story: Before the introduction of electronic amplification, it was difficult, if not impossible, for an orator to be clearly heard throughout an immense space such as Notre-Dame Cathedral. Yet the ceremonies that took place under its Gothic vaults included important spoken sequences such as readings and preaching. Acoustic modeling is employed to evaluate the audibility and intelligibility of orator position in the cathedral. In the cover image, a 19th c watercolor depicts Lacordaire preaching from the pulpit in the nave of Notre-Dame and the results of simulating the Speech Transmission Index to evaluate intelligibility from this location.
