Cover Story: 11Be is one of the earliest discovered and most iconic halo nuclei and has played a historic role in shaping our understanding of exotic nuclear structure. Using ab initio nuclear lattice effective field theory with high-fidelity chiral interactions, this work provides a microscopic description of its halo from first principles. The results reveal a pronounced two-cluster core with three valence neutrons: two occupying π orbitals in the neck region, and a third exhibiting both σ-orbital and halo character, extending far from the core. The study shows how clustering and weak binding cooperate to produce the remarkable structure of 11Be. View this paper
