Cover Story: Persistent corneal epithelial defects (PCEDs) represent a challenging clinical condition that can lead to corneal scarring and vision loss if left untreated. This review aims to list the current therapeutics in treating PCEDs, including lubrication and mechanical support, as well as developing therapeutics that target growth factors, stem cells, and other regenerative structures within the corneal biosphere. We also discuss potential surgical treatments which restore desensitized nerves, limbal stem cells, or improve ocular surface integrity through advanced grafting and neurotization techniques. View this paper
