Cover Story: The comfort and performance of tool handles are often limited by the stiffness of conventional materials, which can cause uneven contact pressure distribution and user fatigue. This study introduces a bioinspired approach using 3D-printed gyroid cellular metamaterials with tunable stiffness to mimic the mechanical response of human soft tissue. Finite element simulations and user trials with foxtail saws showed that medium-stiffness handles reduce peak contact pressures while maintaining grip stability, outperforming both rigid plastic and overly soft handles. By balancing pressure redistribution and stability, this design enhances comfort, reduces fatigue, and provides new insights for ergonomic product development in force-intensive tasks. View this paper
